Is there a better way to celebrate Independence Day than with a very American meal? I don’t think so. On this recent fourth of July, we headed to downtown San Jose for the San Jose Bacon Festival 2014, a two day event full of meaty goodness.
Hosted at the Plaza de Cesar Chavez, this is the second year the Bacon Festival has occurred in San Jose. And the plaza was packed with bacon lovers. Food trucks lined the outside of the plaza, each with their own way of making bacon something special. Every food item was under 5 dollars, and included options like sliders, tacos, and barbecue, tater tots and fries, and some inspiring sweets. Sweets such as cotton candy with bacon, or ice cream tacos rolled in bacon bits. I did not try it, but was very intrigued by the idea of bacon flavored shaved ice, available at one of the stands.
It’s almost overwhelming how many bacon options there are, and it was often difficult to make a decision about which truck to visit next. With the long lines and crowds of people, many of the trucks ran out of their best bacon options a couple hours prior to the end of the festival.
There wasn’t just food to entertain us, although we were mostly there for the food and the company. Alongside the food trucks, there was a mini street mart with vendors selling goods, as well as live music. Bands performed on stage throughout the days, and we even caught some pro wrestling.
The biggest entertainment of all should have been the fireworks. Unfortunately, the festival advertised a fireworks viewing area that did not deliver. The crowds of people gathered on the grass waiting for the show to start and wondered where the show would be. We realized as they started that they were behind a tree and a building, and no where in the plaza could you actually see the fireworks. So we grabbed our blanket and headed down the street with the hordes of people, and finally just stopped on a curb nearby to see what we could. Hopefully, as the years go on, the coordinators of the San Jose Bacon Festival continue to work out these kinks, because this was definitely a great way to spend the day with friends.
